Workshop on Wind Tunnel Testing for Product Design Optimization

The Department of Mechanical Engineering of Srinivas Institute of Technology, Mangalore, in association with All Students Mechanical Association (ASMA), the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), and EDP Cell, organized a hands-on session on “Wind Tunnel Testing for Product Design Optimization in Startups: Measurement of Lift and Drag” on May 29, 2025. Dr. Gangadhara Rao served as the expert resource person for the workshop. The workshop aimed to equip participants with a foundational understanding of wind tunnel testing methodologies and their practical application in optimizing product designs. It specifically focused on the measurement and analysis of lift and drag forces—critical components in evaluating aerodynamic performance, especially for startups aiming to develop efficient, stable, and functional products. The event followed a structured agenda, combining theoretical knowledge, practical demonstrations, and interactive discussions. Key sessions included: - Introduction to Aerodynamics and Its Relevance to Product Design - Overview of Wind Tunnels: Types, Components, and Capabilities - Designing and Manufacturing Models for Wind Tunnel Testing - Hands-on Demonstration: Measurement of Lift and Drag using a Wind Tunnel The workshop effectively provided students and participants with insights into aerodynamic design strategies and real-world testing applications. The event was coordinated by Prof. Mohd Gowspeer, under the guidance of Dr. Shankar K. S., Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department. Additional support was provided by IIC Coordinator Dr. Raghavendra M. J. and ASMA Staff Advisor Prof. Sathyaprakash A.
