Technology Awareness Program for Rural Schools
Srinivas Institute of Technology, Valachil, Mangaluru Institute’s Innovation Cell “Cyber-Security Awareness For Rural Schools” Date: 22/02/2025 On February 22, 2025, under the Institute’s Innovation Cell and the Association of Information Science and Engineering (AISE), the Department of ISE organized a “Cyber Security Awareness workshop for students at a government school” located in Valachil. The objective of the workshop was to raise awareness about the importance of cyber security in today’s increasingly digital world. Many of the students from rural areas are not adequately exposed to the risks and precautions associated with internet use, which led us to design a session tailored to their needs. Through interactive activities and simple, yet informative presentations, we aimed to empower students with the knowledge to stay safe online. The workshop aimed to educate students on cyber security threats like phishing, malware, and identity theft while promoting safe internet practices such as using strong passwords and avoiding suspicious links. It emphasized responsible online behavior and provided practical tips on cyber hygiene, including regular software updates and safe browsing habits. The session began with an introductory talk where we explained the significance of cyber security in today’s digital age. We introduced the students to the basic concepts of cyber security, emphasizing the need for awareness in protecting personal data and avoiding cyber threats. After the activities, we held a Q&A session where students were encouraged to ask questions about their online safety concerns. Several students shared their experiences with internet use and expressed interest in learning more about securing their online presence. The event was supported by Prof. Sudarshan K., Head of the Department (HOD), ISE. It was skilfully conducted by Bangera Ujwal Ganesh, 4th semester ISE. The event was coordinated by Ms. Aparna N under the guidance of Prof. Sowmya, Staff Advisor of AISE. Their teamwork and dedication ensured the smooth execution of the workshop. The Cyber Security Awareness workshop held on February 22, 2025, was a valuable experience for both the participants and the organizers. It gave rural students an opportunity to learn about the critical aspects of internet safety, and we hope it empowered them to make better decisions online. We believe that such workshops can play a key role in bridging the digital divide, equipping students with the tools they need to protect themselves in the digital world. The success of this workshop motivates us to continue these efforts and expand them to more rural schools, ensuring that more students gain the knowledge and skills to navigate the online world safely.
