Inauguration of IEEE-GRSS Student Branch Chapter and Workshop on AI for Satellite Image Data Analysis

Inauguration of IEEE-GRSS Student Branch Chapter and Workshop on AI for Satellite Image Data Analysis On April 21, 2025, Srinivas Institute of Technology IEEE SB - SIT proudly hosted the Inaugural Ceremony of IEEE-GRSS Student Branch Chapter, followed by a workshop titled "Artificial Intelligence for Satellite Image Data Analysis." This significant event marked a milestone in promoting interdisciplinary research and technological advancements in remote sensing and artificial intelligence among students and faculty members. The event was graced by eminent guests from the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal. The Chief Guest, Dr. Chandan M. C., Assistant Professor, Department of Water Resources & Ocean Engineering, inaugurated the IEEE GRSS Student Chapter. He highlighted the importance of geospatial data, satellite technologies, and interdisciplinary research, encouraging students to take advantage of the IEEE platform to enhance their technical knowledge, professional networking, and global exposure. His motivating address emphasized the role of IEEE societies in nurturing innovation and research culture among young engineers. Following the inauguration, the technical workshop on "Artificial Intelligence for Satellite Image Data Analysis" was conducted by the Guest of Honor and Resource Person, Dr. Shwetha H. R, Assistant Professor in the Department of Water Resources and Ocean Engineering, NITK Surathkal. Dr. Shwetha delivered an insightful and interactive session, exploring the integration of AI techniques—especially machine learning and deep learning algorithms—in the analysis of satellite image data. She discussed real-world applications in environmental monitoring, land use classification, disaster management, and water resource assessment, effectively demonstrating how AI is revolutionizing remote sensing and geospatial analytics. Participants gained valuable exposure to cutting-edge tools, datasets, and methodologies involved in satellite data preprocessing, feature extraction, and AI-based classification models. The workshop included live demonstrations and case studies, offering students a hands-on understanding of the practical aspects of satellite image processing using AI tools and platforms. The event witnessed active participation from students and faculty members, all of whom expressed great enthusiasm and appreciation for the session's relevance and depth. It served as an excellent opportunity to foster academic curiosity and research potential in emerging areas at the intersection of artificial intelligence and geoscience. The program was successfully executed under the leadership and support of Dr. Shrinivasa Mayya D, Principal of Srinivas Institute of Technology, who emphasized the institution's commitment to encouraging research-driven education and student-led innovation. Prof. Sudarshan K, HOD of ISE and CSD, IEEE Student Branch Counsellor, played a pivotal role in organizing the event and aligning it with the vision of academic excellence. The event was coordinated by Dr. Parvathraj KMM, Department of AIML, whose meticulous planning ensured a smooth and enriching experience for all attendees. Dr.Praveen Shenoy, IIC coordinator, supported the event. Overall, the inauguration of IEEE GRSS and the workshop on "Artificial Intelligence for Satellite Image Data Analysis" was a successful and impactful initiative, empowering students to explore new technological frontiers and engage in meaningful interdisciplinary learning.
