IIC ISE & AIDS IPR Workshop
Srinivas Institute of Technology, Valachil, Mangaluru Institute’s Innovation Cell “Innovate and Protect: A Guide to Intellectual Property Rights” Date: 18/11/2024 On November 21, 2024, the Association of Information Science and Engineering (AISE) and the Association of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (AADE), in collaboration with the Institution Innovation Council (IIC), hosted an impactful session titled Innovate and Protect: A Guide to Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). The event was organized for final-year students of the Information Science and Engineering (IS&E) and Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (AI-DS) departments at Srinivas Institute of Technology (SIT), Mangaluru. The session aimed to empower students with knowledge about Intellectual Property Rights and its crucial role in safeguarding their innovative ideas and creations in today’s competitive world. The session featured Prof. Vivek V. Kumar, Assistant Professor in the Department of Marine Engineering at SIT, as the resource person. With his extensive expertise, Prof. Vivek engaged the students in an in-depth exploration of Intellectual Property Rights, their types, and their importance in protecting innovations. He began by introducing the fundamental concepts of IPR and how it functions as a framework to legally protect intellectual assets. He emphasized that IPR not only secures individual rights but also encourages creativity and innovation in various fields. Prof. Vivek detailed the different types of intellectual property, including copyrights, which protect creative and literary works; patents, which safeguard inventions and unique processes; trademarks, which secure the identity of brands through logos, names, and symbols; and geographical indications (GI), which highlight products tied to specific regions. He also covered the significance of trade secrets and measures to prevent unfair competition, providing students with a holistic understanding of the scope of intellectual property. Prof. Vivek explained how intellectual property extends to a variety of creations, such as literary and artistic works, technological inventions, unique product designs, and distinctive brand identities. A key highlight of the session was the practical activity, where participants actively engaged in conducting prior art searches for their ideas using platforms like Google Patents and the Indian Patent Database. This exercise was designed to give students hands-on experience in verifying the originality of their ideas, identifying existing patents, and understanding the process of protecting intellectual assets. By guiding the students through these searches, Prof. Vivek demonstrated the importance of thorough research before pursuing a patent or launching a new product. The practical component helped bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application, enabling students to better appreciate the relevance of IPR in their future careers. The success of this session was made possible by the unwavering support and encouragement of Dr. Shrinivasa Mayya D, Principal of Srinivas Institute of Technology. His vision for fostering innovation and entrepreneurial thinking among students greatly contributed to the effectiveness of the program. The session also benefited from the active involvement and leadership of Prof. Sudarshan K, Head of the IS&E Department, and Prof. Nagaraja Hebbar N, Head of the AI-DS Department, who provided invaluable guidance throughout the event’s planning and execution. The event was meticulously coordinated by Prof. Sowmya, Staff Advisor of AISE and Event Coordinator for IIC, along with Prof. Ganapathi Sharma K, Event Coordinator for IIC. Their dedication to organizing a seamless and enriching experience ensured the active participation of students and the overall success of the program. The session concluded with students gaining a comprehensive understanding of IPR, its significance, and its practical applications. Prof. Vivek’s detailed explanations and the hands-on activity inspired participants to explore their creative potential while being mindful of the importance of protecting their intellectual assets. The event provided invaluable insights into navigating the complexities of intellectual property and equipped students with tools to innovate confidently and responsibly. By fostering awareness about Intellectual Property Rights and its role in promoting innovation, the program marked a significant milestone in creating an innovation-driven culture at Srinivas Institute of Technology. It highlighted the institutes commitment to preparing students for real-world challenges, ensuring they are not only equipped with technical skills but also with the knowledge to safeguard their innovations effectively. #IIC#ISE#AIDS#IPR #AISE#AADE#SRINIVASINSTITUTEOFTECHNOLOGY
