The Department of Marine Engineering, Srinivas Institute of Technology, Mangaluru, in association with AIMES (Association of Integrated Marine Engineering Students) and IIIC (Industry Institute and Interaction Cell), organised an interaction and faculty training session during the visit of Commodore (Retd.) Dhareshwar, Indian Navy, to the department on 13 August 2026.

As part of his visit, Commodore Dhareshwar donated a scaled model of a ship’s engine room to the Department of Marine Engineering. The model provides a detailed representation of the arrangement of machinery, equipment and systems within a marine engine room and serves as an effective teaching aid to help students understand the spatial arrangement and interconnection of shipboard systems.

Following the presentation, Commodore Dhareshwar conducted a faculty training session on effectively incorporating the scaled model into classroom teaching. He explained how the model, along with ship diagrams, system diagrams and machinery-layout drawings, could be used to help students visualise machinery arrangements, system layouts and the relationship between various components of an actual ship’s engine room. The session emphasised connecting theoretical concepts with their practical application onboard ships. Drawing upon his extensive experience in the Indian Navy, Commodore Dhareshwar shared valuable practical insights into marine systems and highlighted the importance of making marine engineering subjects more visual, application-oriented and experiential. The donated engine-room model will serve as a valuable instructional resource for the department, while the training will assist faculty members in adopting more effective teaching methods. The Department of Marine Engineering expressed its sincere appreciation to Commodore (Retd.) Dhareshwar for his generous contribution and for sharing his knowledge and professional expertise with the faculty members.

The programme was graced by the presence of Dr. Lokesh V., Head of the Department of Marine Engineering, along with the faculty members of the department. Prof. Vivek V. Kumar, AIMES Coordinator and Dr. Deepak J, Departmental IIIC Coordinator, coordinated the event. The programme was conducted with the valuable support and encouragement of Dr. Shrinivasa Mayya D., Principal, Srinivas Institute of Technology. The active participation and support of the faculty members contributed to the successful conduct of the programme.
