HAM Radio from Amateur Communication to Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Social Impact
The Automobile and Aeronautical Association (AMARA), in collaboration with the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), organized a session titled “HAM Radio from Amateur Communication to Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Social Impact” on 22nd August 2026 at 11:00 AM at room no M501, Srinivas Institute of Technology, Mangaluru. The session was conducted by Dr Umashankar K S, Professor, Department of Aeronautical Engineering, SIT, Mangaluru, The session was organized with the objective to create awareness about HAM Radio, its history, applications in communication, innovation, entrepreneurship, and emergency services, and to introduce students to the HAM Radio licensing process and practical opportunities.
The session on “HAM Radio: From Amateur Communication to Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Social Impact” provided an interesting insight into the history and development of radio communication and the evolution of HAM Radio. The resource person explained the importance of HAM Radio in communication, innovation, entrepreneurship, technical learning, and social service. He highlighted its usefulness during emergency situations and natural disasters, especially when regular communication systems may fail. The basic working principles, communication methods, equipment, and applications of HAM Radio were also discussed. He explained the HAM Radio licensing process and examination requirements in India, along with the importance of following communication rules and regulations. The session encouraged students to develop practical knowledge in electronics, wireless communication, and new technology. Overall, the session created awareness among students about the opportunities and practical applications of HAM Radio in innovation, entrepreneurship, and community service.
The session began at 11:00 AM with Ms. Saloni Naik, a 7th semester Aeronautical Engineering student, extending a warm welcome to the gathering and served as the master of ceremonies. Mr. Vinayaka, a 7th semester Aeronautical Engineering student, introduced the resource person. The event concluded with Ms. Shreya, 7th semester Aeronautical Engineering student, delivering the vote of thanks.
The program was coordinated by Dr. Niranjan Prabhu, Prof. Prakash T and Prof. Jagdeesh B. The event was successfully conducted with the guidance of Dr. Sandesh Kumar Rai (HOD – AU), Dr. Praveen Shenoy (HOD-AE), and under the leadership of Dr. Shrinivasa Mayya D, Principal, SIT.
