Session on Holistic and Integrated Well-Being
The Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Marine Engineering, Srinivas Institute of Technology, Mangaluru, in association with IIC, AIMES and ASMA, organised a session on “Holistic & Integrated Well-Being – A Lifestyle Management Approach through Yoga, Nutrition and Mental Health” on 7 August 2026.
The resource person for the session was Dr. Chaithra M, BNYS, MD in Clinical Yoga and Gold Medallist from RGUHS, Bengaluru. The programme was welcomed and introduced by Prof. Vivek Vijay Kumar, Coordinator, Department of Marine Engineering. The programme was coordinated by Prof. Vivek Vijay Kumar, Dr. Satyaprakash A. and Dr. Sandesh K. S.
During the session, Dr. Chaithra addressed the importance of counselling and mental well-being among students preparing for careers in the marine industry, where stress management, emotional resilience and psychological preparedness are especially important. She discussed practical strategies that students can adopt to cope with academic pressure, career-related stress and demanding professional environments.
A major highlight of the programme was the hands-on session on pranayama and breathing exercises. Dr. Chaithra demonstrated simple breathing and relaxation techniques that can be practised regularly to improve concentration, reduce anxiety and manage stress. Students as well as faculty members actively participated in the exercises and other activities conducted during the session.
The programme witnessed the presence of Dr. Shankar K. S., Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Lokesh V., Head of the Department of Marine Engineering, along with faculty members, coordinators and students from both departments. Members of Samatvam also participated in the programme.
The interactive nature of the session made it highly engaging and beneficial. The practical exercises, discussions and stress-management strategies provided a refreshing break from the regular academic routine and offered considerable mental relaxation and relief to the students and faculty members.
Overall, the programme successfully highlighted the importance of integrating mental health, yoga, breathing practices and healthy lifestyle management into student life, particularly for those preparing to enter demanding professional fields such as the marine industry.
