Technical Exposure visit Appropriate and Sustainable Technologies
The students of First Year Engineering (Physics Cycle) undertook a Technical Exposure Visit to
Dakshina Kannada Nirmithi Kendra ,Suratkal, Mangaluru on 18-12-25 as part of the
program “Appropriate and Sustainable Technologies.” The visit was organized with the objective
of providing practical exposure to eco-friendly construction practices and sustainable development
concepts that complement classroom learning.
During the visit, students were introduced to the vision and mission of Nirmithi Kendras, which
focus on promoting cost-effective, energy-efficient, and locally available construction
technologies. The experts at DKNK explained various appropriate building technologies,
including stabilized mud blocks, filler slab roofing, ferrocement components, hollow concrete
blocks, and prefabricated elements. Emphasis was laid on reducing the use of conventional
materials, minimizing construction waste, and lowering overall project costs without
compromising structural strength or durability.
The students also gained insights into sustainable housing practices, rainwater harvesting
techniques, material recycling, and methods to reduce the carbon footprint of construction
activities. Demonstrations and explanations highlighted how scientific principles from physics,
such as heat insulation, load distribution, and material properties, are applied in real-world civil
and architectural solutions.
This exposure visit helped students understand the relevance of interdisciplinary engineering
knowledge in addressing environmental and societal challenges. Overall, the visit to Dakshina
Kannada Nirmithi Kendra was highly informative and inspiring, encouraging students to adopt
sustainable thinking and responsible engineering practices in their future professional careers.
The success of this exposure visit was made possible due to the continuous support and
encouragement of Dr. Shrinivasa Mayya D, Principal of Srinivas Institute of Technology, whose vision promotes a culture of innovation and lifelong learning. Dr. Praveen Shenoy, IIC
Coordinator, played a significant role in conducting the event under Institution’s Innovation
Council. The event was organized by the under the guidence of Dr. Anant Kumar Kulkarni,
HOD, Department of Mathematics and Student Welfare Officer and faculty members of Bascic
Sciences.
