Duties and Responsibilities of an Engine Cadet
The Department of Marine Engineering, in association with the Industry Institute Interaction Cell and AIMES, organized a webinar on “Duties and Responsibilities of an Engine Cadet” on 29th November 2025. The session was delivered by Mr. Rucheer Shirvaikar, Third Engineer/Second Assistant Engineer, who shared valuable insights from his sailing experience.
Mr. Shirvaikar explained the key roles and responsibilities of an engine cadet on board, emphasizing the importance of safety, discipline, and continuous learning. He discussed daily routines such as machinery checks, bilge sounding, assisting in watchkeeping, and maintaining engine room logs. Through practical examples from his own voyages, he highlighted how cadets assist senior engineers during maintenance, troubleshoot minor machinery issues, and support bunkering operations. He also stressed the need for professionalism, teamwork, and proactive involvement in engine room activities. His real-life examples helped students understand the working environment on board and the expectations placed on cadets during training.
The event was coordinated by Prof. Nithin Joshuva, with support from AIMES members and student coordinator Mr. Dhanush. Dr. Lokesh V, Head of Marine Engineering, and Prof. Vivek V Kumar, AIMES Coordinator, guided the smooth conduct of the webinar.
