The Department of Basic Sciences organized a workshop on “Protecting Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and IP Management for Startups” to create awareness about safeguarding innovations in the modern entrepreneurial ecosystem. The session was delivered by Dr. Lokesh K. S., Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science and Business Studies, who served as the resource person and shared valuable insights on the role of intellectual property in startup success.

Dr. Lokesh explained that Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) are legal protections granted to creators for their inventions and creative works. He discussed various types of IPR, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, design rights, and trade secrets, emphasizing their importance in securing ownership and preventing unauthorized use. He highlighted that for startups, protecting intellectual property is crucial as it helps maintain a competitive edge, enhances credibility, and attracts investors.

The session also focused on effective IP management strategies, where startups must identify their intellectual assets early, file for appropriate protections, and maintain proper documentation. Aligning IP strategies with business goals and regularly monitoring for infringement were also emphasized as key practices.

Dr. Lokesh addressed common challenges such as lack of awareness, high costs, and complex procedures, suggesting the use of government support systems and incubation centers. Overall, the workshop provided practical knowledge and reinforced the idea that innovation must be supported by proper protection and management for long-term success.

The success of this session was made possible due to the continuous support and encouragement of Dr. Shrinivasa Mayya D, Principal of Srinivas Institute of Technology, whose vision promotes a culture of innovation and lifelong learning. Dr. Praveen Shenoy, IIC Coordinator, played a significant role in conducting the event under Institution’s Innovation Council. The event was organized by the guidence of Dr.Gopalkrishna Bhat, HOD, Department of Chemistry, and First Year Coordinator.
