IPR to IPO: Powering Startups with Protection and Funding
The modern startup ecosystem thrives on innovation, creativity, and disruptive technologies. However, for innovative ideas to translate into successful businesses, they must be protected and monetized effectively. The seminar on “IPR to IPO: Powering Startups with Protection and Funding” was organized by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Srinivas Institute of Technology, Mangalore, under the banner of the All Students Mechanical Association (ASMA), in association with the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), EDP Cell, III Cell, and the Incubation and Start-up Cell, on 25th August 2025. The resource person for the seminar was Professor Jayaram Thumbe, Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering.
The event was presided over by Dr. Shankar K S, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In his presidential address, he highlighted the importance of innovation in today’s rapidly changing world, emphasizing that students and young entrepreneurs are at the heart of this transformation.
The session underscored how patents, trademarks, copyrights, and designs act as crucial safeguards for innovation, providing startups with a competitive edge and boosting investor confidence. Professor Jayaram Thumbe, the resource person, further highlighted that strong IPR portfolios not only protect ideas but also enhance valuation, funding opportunities, and long-term sustainability.
The discussions also focused on the journey from idea protection to business scaling and eventually reaching an Initial Public Offering (IPO). Real-world case studies of Indian and global startups showcased how IPR has been the cornerstone of entrepreneurial success stories.
The program inspired participants to view IPR as a strategic business tool rather than just a legal requirement, reinforcing its role in shaping innovative, investment-ready, and globally competitive startups.
The event was organized by Dr. Raghavendra M J (IA-IIC), and graced by Prof. Sandesh K S (Faculty Coordinator of ASMA), Prof. Sathyaprakash A (Department Coordinator of EDP Cell, IIIC, and Startup & Incubation Cell), along with other faculty members. The seminar was successfully conducted under the guidance of Dr. Shrinivasa Mayya D, Principal, and Dr. Praveen Shenoy, IIC Coordinator, Srinivas Institute of Technology, Mangalore.
