Faculty Development Programme on “R Programming and WEKA Tool”

A two-day faculty development programme on “R Programming and WEKA Tool” was organised by Computer Science & Engineering department on 18th and 19th January 2018. The program was inaugurated by Prof. Naveen S. Pagad, Assistant Professor Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Institute of Technology(SDMIT), Uijire. In total 31 participants from various departments attended the workshop.

The FDP aimed to provide opportunities to faculty members to enrich their teaching skill and research in the field of Data Science. The Programme also intended to disseminate the knowledge of useful computation tools.

On the first day (18/01/2018) of the program Prof. Naveen S. Pagad, Assistant Professor, SDMIT, Uijire addressed on “Data Science using R and WEKA Tool “ from 10.30 to 1.00pm in sessions. He also explained us the data science scope, data scientist skill set , applications of WEKA Tool and important pre-requisites to become a Data Scientist. In the afternoon session he gave us detailed hands-on to basics of R Programming Language.

On the second day (19/01/2018), Prof. Basavraj Patil , Assistant Professor, SDMIT, Ujire, took four sessions, from 9:30 to 4:30 pm. In the morning session he covered the basic concepts of Data mining, Supervised learning, Classification, Feature Selection, Feature Extraction, Decision Trees, Bayes Classifier and hands-on on WEKA Tool. In the afternoon, a hands-on session on how to train and test the data and to develop a model and also how apply various methods like, Decision Trees, Random Forest and Artificial Neural Networks was given. All the FDP sessions were highly interactive and were interesting.

Thus the faculty development programme was a true overall value addition for the faculty members and was an academically enriching experience.

The FDP was successfully completed at 4:30 pm, with a valedictory function.
